About Me

Welcome to my online portfolio! My name is Paul Renton and I am a Software Engineer passionate about bringing ideas to life and empowering teammates through engineering.  I have a Masters degree from Southern Methodist University Guildhall in Software Development, which is one of the top programs in the country. I received my Bachelors in Finance with a minor in Economics from Southern Methodist University. I have a strong Accounting background with an emphasis on financial analysis of financial statements and GAAP reporting. I currently work for Heart Machine as a Senior Game Programmer.

I come from a bit of an unorthodox background for most Software Engineers and programmers. Before obtaining my Masters degree from SMU Guildhall, I was a self taught programmer and developed an interest in it when I was young. While working in finance related positions post-bachelor, I relied heavily on programming to be more efficient and maintained tools at various finance jobs. I fell in love even more with programming as I continued to utilize it at work and in smart phone application development. I knew it was the right path for me when I would wake up in the morning and look forward to work. 

Software Development has been a part of my life since a young age and the prospect of working with a great team is very exciting. I am very interested in all aspects of software programming and development, whether it is Tools Programming, UI, Gameplay programming, Systems Programming, Graphics, Networking, AI, Application Development, or Engine Programming. I consider myself a generalist and love the problems Software Engineering presents. My strongest languages are C++, Java, Python, Objective-C and Javascript. I am a firm believer that once you master the fundamentals of Software Engineering, learning any new language is rarely an issue. I love approaching the unknown and finding ways to empower others to solve complex problems.
